Line Strength Calculator
Calculate the recommended fishing line strength (lb test) and diameter based on target fish weight.
How to Use the Line Strength Calculator
- Enter the expected weight of the fish you are targeting.
- Select the fishing type (freshwater, saltwater, or fly).
- Click Calculate to see the recommended lb test and line diameter.
- Choose a line that meets or exceeds the recommended strength.

- •Matching tippet strength for fly fishing leaders.
- •Planning a complete tackle setup for a fishing trip.
Fórmula
Recommended lb test = Fish weight (kg) × 2.205 × multiplier. Multiplier: freshwater ×2.0, saltwater ×2.5, fly ×1.5. Diameter ≈ √(lb test) × 0.055 mm.
Preguntas Frecuentes
What lb test should I use?
As a rule of thumb use 2× the fish's weight in pounds for freshwater, 2.5× for saltwater.
Does fishing type affect line choice?
