Weld Strength Calculator
Calculate fillet weld shear capacity using the effective throat thickness, weld length, and allowable shear stress.
How to Use the Weld Strength Calculator
- Enter the effective throat thickness of the fillet weld in mm.
- Enter the total weld length in mm.
- Enter the allowable shear stress for the weld metal in MPa.
Anwendungsfälle
- •Checking fillet weld adequacy in structural connections.
- •Sizing attachment welds for brackets and gussets.
- •Verifying weld design against code allowables.
Formel
F = 0.707 × a × L × τ, where a is throat thickness (mm), L is weld length (mm), τ is allowable shear stress (MPa). Result in kN.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
What is effective throat thickness?
For a fillet weld, the effective throat is 0.707 times the leg size. It is the shortest distance from the root to the weld face and determines the load-carrying capacity.
What allowable shear stress should I use?
For structural steel weld metal per AWS D1.1, the allowable shear stress is typically 0.3 × nominal tensile strength of the electrode, e.g. ~145 MPa for E70XX electrodes.
Is this calculator free?
