Electrode Consumption Calculator
Estimate welding electrode or filler wire mass consumption from weld cross-section, length, material density, and waste factor.
How to Use the Electrode Consumption Calculator
- Enter the weld cross-section area in mm² (e.g. for a 6mm fillet: A ≈ 0.5 × 6² = 18 mm²).
- Enter the total weld length in mm.
- Enter the material density (default 7850 for steel) and waste percentage.
Anwendungsfälle
- •Estimating electrode quantities for welding project budgets.
- •Material procurement planning for fabrication shops.
- •Comparing filler metal consumption across welding processes.
Formel
Mass (kg) = ρ × A × L × (1 + waste/100), where A is weld area (mm²), L is weld length (mm), ρ is density (kg/m³).
Häufig gestellte Fragen
What density should I use for steel electrodes?
Use 7850 kg/m³ for steel (default). For stainless steel use ~7900 kg/m³, for aluminium filler use ~2700 kg/m³.
What is the waste factor?
The waste factor accounts for electrode stubs, spatter, and slag. A typical value is 15–25% for SMAW (stick welding) and 5–10% for GMAW (MIG).
Is this calculator free?
