OhMyCalc

Hardenability Calculator

Estimate the ideal critical diameter (DI) and critical section size for steel hardenability using Jominy end-quench approximation.

How to Use the Hardenability Calculator

  1. Enter the carbon content of the steel in percent.
  2. Enter the alloy multiplying factor (product of individual element factors; use 1.0 for plain carbon steel).
  3. Click Calculate to get the ideal diameter and estimated critical section sizes.

الصيغة

DI_base ≈ 0.54 × √C (inches, grain size 7). DI = DI_base × alloy_factor. Critical diameter: D_oil ≈ 0.4 × DI, D_water ≈ 0.2 × DI.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What is hardenability?
Hardenability is the ability of steel to be hardened to a given depth by quenching. It is not the same as hardness — a highly hardenable steel can form martensite deep into a thick section.
What is the ideal diameter DI?
DI is the diameter of a steel bar that would harden to 50% martensite at the centre when quenched in a theoretically ideal (infinite severity) quench.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, all OhMyCalc calculators are completely free to use.
