Why is pace important?
Faster walking raises the metabolic cost super-linearly as gait efficiency drops. The exponent 1.2 captures this non-linearity.
Does terrain matter?
Yes — hills, sand, snow and stairs can roughly double the burn. Add a MET surcharge when walking on challenging terrain.
